Quli Qutub Shah founded the present Hyderabad. Due to acute water-shortage and over-crowding at Golconda, he laid the foundations of a new city and called it Bhagyanagar after his Hindu courtesan Bhagmati. He changed the name to Hyderabad when she became his queen and got the name Haider Mahal. Hyderabad is the capital of Andhra Pradesh. Golconda Fort was originally built of mud and brick and later on built of stone. It was initially built by the Kakatiyas in 11th century AD and later by the Qutub Shahi Kings. Charminar is the prominent landmark of the city. It was built in 1591 AD by Moh. Quli Qutub Shah to commemorate the end of the epidemic of plague. It is gateway with four towers signifying the four cardinal directions. 20 m high towers rests over a 24m high plinth.
Mecca Masjid, one of the largest mosque in the world, was started by Moh. Quli Qutub Shah in 1614 AD and was completed by Aurangzeb in 1687 AD. It is called the Mecca Masjid because it is built in the style of the mosque at Mecca. It is believed that a room in the courtyard has the sacred hair of the Prophet Mohammed.
Salarjung Museum is worthy of a visit on tours to Bangalore. Salr Jung III, the Prime Minister of Nizam Osman Ali Khan, built it. The museum has a vast private collection of over 35,000 exhibits comprising of woodcarvings, sculptures, Persian miniature paintings, and arms. The library of the museum possesses 50000 books.
