Bandhavgarh National Park
No India trip can ever be complete without a visit to its rich wildlife sanctuaries and national parks. Bandhavgarh National Park in the Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh is a nature lover’s delight. One of the major tourist attractions of Central India, Bandhavgarh is a small national park known for having highest density of tiger population in India. Bandhavgarh was once the royal hunting ground of the Maharajas of Rewa – the land of white tigers. It was so full of game that it became the preferred destination of the Maharajas who considered it auspicious to kill 109 tigers in a lifetime. However, white tigers are now believed to have been hunted out of existence. The last known white tiger sighting dates back to 1951, when Maharaja Martand Singh captured a white tiger cub that was named Mohan. Today, Mohan has been stuffed using taxidermy procedures and is on display at the Maharaja’s Palace at Bandhavgarh.
Sprawling across 448 sq km, Bandhavgarh has a good collection of other wildlife species such as deer, leopard, sambar and wild boar; and an equally rich avian fauna with over 200 bird species. Other tourist attractions of Bandhavgarh National Park and Tiger Reserve is the ancient fort and several pre-historic caves in the region sporting inscriptions and cave drawings.
An elephant ride in an Indian forest is a dream come true for many international tourists who love the close view of animals in most inaccessible areas of the jungle, perched high on the back of the gentle giant. Jungle jeep safaris are also quite exciting and excellent forest guides are an absolute must for your own safety. Though, you are not allowed to get off the jeep, interesting tiger stories and thrilling opportunities of capturing excellent wildlife photographs keep you excited throughout your forest journey at Bandhavgarh.
