Jodhpur
Jodhpur is one of the oldest cities of Rajputana in Rajasthan. Once part of mighty Marwar, Jodhpur was founded by Rao Jodha 30 years before Bikaner was founded, over 100 years before Udaipur came into existence and about 300 years before Jaipur was conceived. True to the India trip packages that highlight Rajasthan wonders, Jodhpur offers fascinating tales of Rathore clan of Rajputs, heroic warriors and beauteous queens; and evidences of imperial grandeur, pomp and pageantry.
Though the present Maharaja do not hold the position of a ruler anymore, he is still considered to be the father figure by the people of the city who refer to him as ‘Bapji’. The palaces that have turned into luxury royal heritage hotels have done a good job at preserving Jodhpur’s rich historical, architectural, cultural, and artistic heritage. Umaid Bhawan Palace that dominates the city was conceived as an honorable option for drought victims to earn wages and sustain their families. The palace has as many as 347 spacious rooms built in art-deco style and is worth seeing.
Camels are omnipresent in the desert city of Jodhpur. The tourism highlight of the city is the 15th century Mehrangarh Fort, which has been described by Rudyard Kipling as the ‘the work of angels, fairies and giants’. The Shringar Chowki at Fort is used to anoint a new ruler while the hand markings at Loha Pol or the Gate of Iron belong to Satis or royal ladies who entered the flames of the funeral pyre of their husbands as a mark of their love, devotion, and loyalty. The Desert Festival of Jodhpur is one of the biggest draw for international tourists to the city.
