Built near a small village, in middle of deep dense forests of Khajur or date trees, Khajuraho were lost in anonymity for several centuries together. It was only in 1838 that a British officer hunting in the area rediscovered the mysterious temples with highly wrought exteriors depicting all sorts of worldly pleasures and plain interiors perhaps indicating inner peace and divine spirituality. Out of the original 80 temples, only 22 have survived the ravages of time. The temple complex is divided into Western Group, Eastern Group and Southern Group of Temples, out of which Western Group has some of the most ornate temples to boast of.
